Field Trips

We offer field trips for all age groups, from kindergarten to college. Our educational programming focuses on the many topics related to Spring Hill’s history, including early Ohio, the foundation of Stark County, agriculture, industry, and the Underground Railroad. We can accommodate up to 55 students per trip unless a combined field trip is planned.

Price: $4/student, 1 adult chaperone for every 15 students is free, teachers are free.

When you arrive: After turning onto Springhill Lane, NE, follow the lane until the first chance to turn right, which leads to our lower parking lot. There is ample space for parking buses and groups of cars. A staff member or volunteer will meet your group in the lower lot and lead them up the lane to the historic farmhouse.

Spring Hill x Five Oaks Field Trip Partnership

Spring Hill and Five Oaks of Massillon have partnered on field trips for several years. Through a combined field trip to both locations, students will learn about Massillon’s history from 1812 until the present day.

At Spring Hill, students will learn about Thomas and Charity Rotches foundation of Kendal in 1812. They will also learn about the Wales family, who continued Thomas and Charity’s legacy until 1973. At Five Oaks, students will learn about the Russell and McClymond families and explore how their Russell steam engines contributed to Massillon’s modernization.

After visiting these two locations, students will better understand their local history. They will also learn about the differences between the Rotch, Wales, Russell, and McClymonds families of Kendal and Massillon.

Generally, a school will split their students into two groups that get a chance to experience both locations in the morning and afternoon. A sample itinerary can be seen below, but can be accommodated to fit your school’s needs:

  • 10:00: Arrive at first location (Spring Hill or Five Oaks)
  • 10:00-11:40: Tour/activities at first location
  • 11:45-12:20: Break for lunch
  • 12:20-12:30: Travel to second location (Spring Hill or Five Oaks)
  • 12:30-1:45: Tour/activities at second location
  • 1:45: Board bus and return to school

An activity workbook was created by coordinators at both sites that will be distributed virtually to teachers/curriculum directors to work on before or as a trip follow-up. It will introduce and build upon the content discussed on the field trips. Staff and volunteers are also available to conduct a pre-visit in classrooms to introduce students to the sites and topics they will hear about.
