Spring Hill x Five Oaks Field Trip Partnership
Spring Hill and Five Oaks of Massillon have partnered on third and fourth grade field trips for a number of years. Students will learn about the founding of early Massillon (Kendal) by Spring Hill’s Thomas Rotch, along with its history with agriculture and the Underground Railroad circa 1810-20s. Fast-forward a few decades in time to Five Oaks mansion on historic Fourth Street (circa 1890s) to learn about the McClymonds/Russell family and their role in the industrial revolution of Massillon with Russell steam engines.
Generally, a school will split their students into two groups that get a chance to experience both locations in the morning and afternoon. A sample itinerary can be seen below, but can be accommodated to fit your school’s needs:
- 10:00: Arrive at first location (SH or FO)
- 10:00-11:40: Tour/activities at first location
- 11:45-12:20: Brown bag lunch at first location or Salvation Army behind Five Oaks
- 12:20-12:30: Travel to second location
- 12:30-1:45: Tour/activities at second location
- 1:45: Board bus & return to school
An activity workbook was created by coordinators at both sites that will be distributed virtually to teachers/curriculum directors to work on before or as a trip follow-up. It will introduce and build upon the content discussed on the field trips. Staff and volunteers are also available to conduct a pre-visit in classrooms to introduce students to the sites and topics they will hear about.
