Spring Hill and Five Oaks Field Trips

Spring Hill and Five Oaks of Massillon have partnered on field trips for several years. Through a combined field trip to both locations, students will learn about Massillon’s history from 1812 until the present day. Please note that this combined field trip requires coordination between Spring Hill and Five Oaks and may not always be available due to both organizations having their own calendars and separate event schedules.

After visiting these two locations, students will better understand their local history. They will also learn about the differences between the Rotch, Wales, Russell, and McClymonds families of Kendal and Massillon.

At Spring Hill, students will learn about Thomas and Charity Rotches foundation of Kendal in 1812. They will also learn about the Wales family, who continued Thomas and Charity’s legacy until 1973.

At Five Oaks, students will learn about the Russell and McClymond families and explore how their Russell steam engines contributed to Massillon’s modernization.

Generally, a school will split their students into two groups that get a chance to experience both locations in the morning and afternoon. A sample itinerary can be seen below.
