Explore over 200 years of history at Spring Hill!
Step back in time with your students on a field trip to Spring Hill Historic Home and Underground Railroad Site, a local landmark that has stood for more than two centuries. This immersive experience offers students a firsthand look at American history through the lens of daily life across the generations of the Rotch and Wales families.
Led by knowledgeable guides, our tours highlights key historical periods, artifacts, and stories connected to the home’s former residents and the broader community. Students will engage with interactive exhibits, explore original and restored rooms, and discover how this home reflects early Ohio pioneer living, the foundation of Stark County, the Underground Railroad, political, and industrial changes over time.
We offer standards-based field trips and educational programming for classroom students of all ages. This includes K-college, homeschoolers, scouts, youth groups, developmental groups, and we also can tailor programs to fit your group’s area of interest.
Field Trip Options:
BASIC HOUSE TOUR
Tour the 1821 Farmhouse and walk through time as we explore the lives of Thomas and Charity Rotch and the 3 generations of the Wales family. (Optional: packed lunch at the Granary Barn.)

HOUSE AND GROUNDS TOUR
Tour the 1821 Farmhouse and walk through time as we explore the lives of Thomas and Charity Rotch and the 3 generations of the Wales family. Then, step outside to learn more about the gardens and outbuildings of Spring Hill farm. (Optional: packed lunch at the Granary Barn.)

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD FOCUS TOUR
Explore the 1821 Farmhouse and grounds of Spring Hill with a specific focus on our history as a station on the Underground Railroad. Learn about the heroes of the Abolitionist Movement. (Optional: packed lunch at the Granary Barn.)

SPRING HILL AND FIVE OAKS COMBINED TOUR
Arvine Wales III and Edna McClymonds married in 1900, uniting two prominent Massillon families. Through a combined field trip to Arvine and Edna’s childhood homes, students will learn of a multi-generational legacy spanning from 1812 to present day.
**Please note** this field trip requires coordination between Spring Hill and Five Oaks and may not always be available to to each location have separate event schedules. Thank you for your understanding!

Booking a field trip: Please note: Field trips must be booked no later than two weeks in advance. No exceptions. Payment is preferred in advance, but will be accepted the day of the program in the amount due for the number of participants quoted at the time of booking.
When you arrive: After turning onto Springhill Lane, NE, follow the lane until the first chance to turn right, which leads to our lower parking lot. There is ample space for parking buses and groups of cars. A staff member or volunteer will meet your group in the lower lot and lead them up the lane to the historic farmhouse.
